The Empire State Building Run-up is one of most prestigious races in the World and this year’s edition was a huge success. There is just something magical about climbing the most famous building in NYC with dozens of cameramen snapping photos during the elite mass start and finish line.
The race has lost a bit of its luster in recent years with its opaque selection criteria and limited lottery entry, but the organizer of the race, NYC Runs has put the race back on track – in just its 2nd year running the race.
This year NYC Runs used both the Towerrunning and Towerrunning USA ranking systems as part of the selection criteria for the elite wave… and it worked perfectly. Gone are the days of nail biting and keeping your fingers crossed. Now it actually pays off to do well on the stair climbing race circuit.
On the women’s side, Australian (and Singapore resident) Suzy Walsham took home her 7th victory, tying the record set by Thomas Dold. Suzy was followed by Americans Stephanie Hucko and Cindy Harris* in 2nd and 3rdrespectively.
*This has to be at least Cindy’s 10th podium spot… she must own the record.
On the men’s side, Australian Darren Wilson finally won the big race after several years of trying. Coming in 2nd was Italian Emanuele Manzi and rounding out the podium was American Sproule Love*.
*It is about time we finally have an American on the Men’s podium!
Congratulations to all the winners and a big "Thank You!" to NYC Runs for making ESBRU great again.
